Amazon Echo speakers let you stream music from various services and devices. Typically, you issue the command 'Alexa, play music' followed by the name of the streaming partner. If you use a service regularly, such as Spotify, you can avoid adding the streaming partner name to your command by making it the default provider. That's what we will tell you in this post. To do this, open the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone, press the hamburger menu (three lines) in the top left of the screen and select Settings. Now scroll down until you find Music under the Preferences menu. If youâve not already connected Spotify to Alexa, press the Link New Service button and follow the onscreen instructions. How to Link Spotify and Choose It as Default For Music in Amazon Echo
You will need the Alexa app for this procedure. The overall idea is broken into two methods â link Spotify with Amazon and make it a default provider. Letâs check the steps.
Link Spotify to Amazon Echo
Before making Spotify the default music provider, itâs important to link the Spotify account to your Amazon Echo device. Here are the steps for the same.
Step 1: Launch the Alexa app on your smartphone. Log in to the Amazon account registered with your Echo device, in case you haven't set it up yet. You should check our guide on how to set up the Echo like a pro.
Step 2: Tap on the three-bar icon at the top. From the menu, select Settings.
Step 3: Scroll down and tap on Music.
Step 4: Tap on Link New Service. Choose Spotify on the next screen. Note: In case you donât see Spotify, it might not be supported by Amazon Echo in your country. Alternatively, it might be still rolling out in your region. So try after a few hours or a day.
Step 5: You will be taken to the Spotify skill page. Tap on Enable to use.

Step 6: Free listening music. Now, you will have to add your Spotify account. Tap on Settings for that on the Spotify skills screen. On the next screen, tap on the Link account.

Another way to link Spotify and Echo is to issue the command, âAlexa, enable Spotify skillâ. That will add Spotify under the list of available music services in the Alexa app in Settings > Music. Then tap on Spotify and follow the steps 6 and 7 mentioned above to link accounts.
Make Spotify as Default for Music in Amazon Echo
After linking Spotify in the Alexa app, you can easily make it the default service. In case you donât do so, you will need to use Spotify at the end of all your voice commands. For instance, âAlexa, play XYZ playlist on Spotify.â If Spotify isnât the default provider, Amazon will fetch music from its music service or another default service. Sometimes, Echo will not play any music, check various ways to fix the problem.
Here are the steps to make Spotify the default music service.
Step 1: Open the Alexa app and go to Settings from the three-bar icon.
Step 2: Tap on Music followed by Default services.
Step 3: Tap on Spotify to choose it as Default Music Library. You can also select Spotify as a default station.
How to Control Spotify on Amazon Echo
When Alexa and Spotify are linked successfully, and you start playing something, you can control that in several ways. Firstly, you can use the Alexa app or through the web on alexa.amazon.com. You can also use the Spotify app or its web version at open.spotify.com.
Lastly, you can use the following Spotify commands on your Echo device:
If playlists do not work as intended, say âAlexa, play (playlist name) playlist.â And if Alexa plays a random playlist instead of the one created by you, add word my to your command, i.e., âAlexa, play my Best songs playlist.â

Besides playing songs from Spotify, you can use Spotify to set a specified song, playlist, or artist as your alarm tone in Echo. For that, issue commands like:

Sometimes, you will be bothered by the lack of communication between Alexa and Spotify. If Alexa doesnât play from Spotify, update the Alexa app, or relink your Spotify account to Echo. You can also try disabling the Spotify Skill and then enable it back.

How to Get Alexa to Play Spotify PlaylistsMethod One: Asking the Alexa Speaker to Play a Spotify Playlist
With your smart speaker turned on and connected to your Amazon and Spotify accounts, ask Alexa to play a Spotify playlist as follows. We asked for one we created named Tomâs Christmas as follows:
Your speaker then says something like â[Playing / shuffling] Tomâs Christmas playlist from Spotify.â The shuffle playlist feature does not work as of this writing, as the playlist still plays in the order that songs were added to it when created, though the shuffle command is accepted. To shuffle play the playlist, use method two, described next.

2. Run the Spotify App
Spotify then displays a home screen that looks something like that shown next.

4. Tap the Playlists Choice to Continue with How to Get Alexa to Play Spotify Playlists
Find the Playlists option at the far left edge of the Your Music screen, which the blue arrow points at in the previous screenshot. The system then displays a list of all the playlists currently saved in the current Spotify account. We currently have four playlists saved in ours, as shown in the next screenshot. In this demo, weâll be playing the Tomâs Christmas playlist.
5. Tap the Playlist youâd Like to Hear on your Alexa Speaker
As mentioned, weâre going to play the Tomâs Christmas playlist in this demo. So, we tapped that one, pointed at by the blue arrow in the previous screenshot. This brings up a sort of playlist editor screen named after the chosen playlist, as shown in the next screenshot, which lists the songs in that playlist.
6. Start your Selected Playlist PlayingReverb App Alexa Won't Play Spotify Playlist
You can have Spotify play the list sequentially from beginning to end by tapping the first song in the list as pointed at by the leftmost blue arrow in the previous screenshot, or you can tap the green Shuffle Play button, which plays the listed songs in random order. In either case, the listed songs begin playing on the current speaker (usually the mobile device on which youâre running the Spotify app), and the playlist editor screen changes to show the Devices Available link, as shown in the next screenshot.
7. Tap the Devices Available Link to Continue with How to Get Alexa to Play Spotify Playlists
This takes you from the playlist editor screen to the Playing From Playlist screen, as shown next. This is a more graphical representation of the previous playlist editor screen, showing a picture of the album from which the current song is taken. This screen also provides controls for pausing playback, skipping ahead to the next song, and skipping back to the previous song in the current playlist. Thereâs also a progress slider that shows the current position in the song currently playing, and you can also select the speaker or speaker group that Spotify will play through. 8. Again, tap the Devices Available Link
The Devices Available option is pointed at by the blue arrow in the previous screenshot. This brings up a menu style list of available speaker devices and groups that have been set up in the current Spotify account (ours in this demo). This menu is called Devices.
9. Tap the Alexa Based Speaker you Wish to Play the Playlist Through
Select this speaker from a list like the one shown above. You may have to scroll the list to find it if you have lots of devices configured in your Spotify account. In our case here, we want the playlist to play on our Office speaker. Thus, we tapped that entry.
The Devices menu then disappears, taking you back to the Playing from Playlist https://cleverdress870.weebly.com/blog/download-feature-on-spotify. Also, note that the Devices Available link is replaced by the name of the speaker now playing. You should now be hearing your Spotify playlist on the Amazon Alexa speaker you selected in step 8 above. Enjoy!
