In November 2018, Spotify released an accompanying app for Apple Watch that allows iPhone users to access and control their favorite Spotify music and podcasts from their wrist. Image via iPhone.
The problem with the Apple Watch is that it typically relies on users to pair the smartwatch with an iPhone. The cellular version of the Apple Watch does reduce its dependence on the iPhone, but when it comes to third-party apps, it’s a bit of a mixed bag as it’s up to the developer to choose to create a standalone app designed for the Apple Watch.

Spotify's Apple Watch app offers the ability to play music on the Apple Watch and control how music is played to Spotify Connect-compatible devices. However, since 2018, it hasn't allowed you to.
Previously, the Spotify app on the Apple Watch could only control the Spotify app on a user's iPhone. However, this beta allows LTE users the ability to take their music on the go while leaving.
I have the watch and while i can control it (with unpredictable behavior) when streaming from my phone to my apple TV, it doesn't work when i stream from the Desktop app to Apple TV. Since the watch is wi-fi connected this is a must have feature so i can control Spotify from anywhere in the house without having to have my phone with me.
The good news for Spotify users is that if you’d rather not have to bring your iPhone with you on your run, you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has since released a standalone app for the Apple Watch. What this means that users will be able to stream music from Spotify through the Apple Watch app directly to their headphones as long as the user has some kind of connection, such as WiFi or cellular data.
According to Spotify, they’ve recently started to roll out this update to its users, so if you haven’t received the update yet, not to worry as it should eventually make its way to you. The company had actually started to test the feature earlier this year, but it looks like they are more or less done and are making it available to more users as we speak. The Spotify app has been on Apple Watch for years now, but it’s really a glorified remote control for the app running on your iPhone. That’s changing right now, with Spotify pushing a server-side change to let you stream music directly to your Apple Watch.
Yes, if you have an LTE-enabled Apple Watch, you never have to carry your iPhone while you’re out jogging. Multiple Twitter users have been showing off the new features, which is still technically in beta. Check out the tweet below from user imPatrickT, who spotted the feature yesterday. The Spotify streaming feature on Apple Watch works on cellular data or on WiFi, so you can use it at the gym as well if you only have the WiFi version. There doesn’t appear to be any search field though, so you’ll have to use Siri to find new tracks to listen to. Better load up your Spotify with some killer playlists before you go on that run.
It’ll also show any recently played content, so that’s one way to get your favorite tracks onto your Apple Watch without fighting with Siri.
As we said earlier, this is a server-side switch, so if you can’t see the feature on your Apple Watch yet, just wait. It’ll be on the way.
